With preseason camp entering its second week, the Youngstown State volleyball program is announcing that Libby Darling, Aleah Hughes and Sarah Varcolla have been named captains for the upcoming season.
Darling is a sophomore setter who will serve in a leadership role from the sidelines this season, having to sit out as she recovers from a knee injury. The Kaysville, Utah, native played in 27 matches last season and led the team with 5.23 assists per set in the 6-2 offense.
Hughes is a captain as she rejoins the program for her redshirt junior season. In 2016, she played in 24 matches and ranked fourth on the team in kills and fifth in digs. The graduate of nearby Western Reserve High School also ranked eighth in the Horizon League with 0.28 aces per set in 2016.
Varcolla is one of two seniors on the squad and is one of the top returning players in the Horizon League. She was the only Penguin to start all 30 matches last season, and she was the only player in the conference to rank in the top eight in both blocks and aces per set. She also led the squad with 256 kills in 2017.
Youngstown State's 2018 season begins on Aug. 24 against Saint Peter's at the Bucknell Invitational.
