Volleyball Finishes First Half of League Play with Loss at Green Bay

Taylor Wolf had 14 kills, and Green Bay hit .292 as a team to beat the Youngstown State volleyball team 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Kress Events Center.

The Phoenix finish the first half of Horizon League play with a 7-1 conference mark while the Penguins complete the first tour at 1-7.

Sarah Varcolla had eight kills, an ace and three blocks, all of which were team highs, to lead the Penguins. Brooklen Pe'a added six kills while Aleah Hughes notched a team-best 11 digs. Morgan Tippie matched Varcolla with three blocks, and Giovanna Kuntze posted 16 assists

Youngstown State hit .219 in the opening set, which it led at 8-6 after a block by Tippie and Varcolla. The Phoenix scored five straight points to go up 11-8, but YSU stayed close and recaptured the lead. The final Penguin advantage came at 18-17, which is when Green Bay ran off six straight points with five kills and an ace to go up 23-18. Varcolla had a kill out of a timeout to stop the run, but Green Bay scored the final two points to complete the win.

Green Bay scored eight straight points to take an insurmountable 11-2 lead in the second set, and it scored the final five points of the match after YSU trailed just 20-16 in the third set.

Youngstown State will begin a four-match home stand on Friday as it hosts Cleveland State at 6 p.m.
