The Youngstown State volleyball team lost a pair of sets by two points and fell 3-0 to IUPUI on Saturday afternoon at Beeghly Center. The set scores were 25-18, 25-23, 25-23.
Aleah Hughes totaled a team-high nine kills, and she added 17 digs for the Penguins. Morgan Tippie had eight kills with no errors in 17 attempts, and Margaux Thompson posted a match-high 21 digs while playing in just two of the sets.
Maggie Gibson had 11 kills and 14 digs to pace IUPUI.
Both the Penguins came into the week ranking in the top 10 in the country in digs per set, and both teams helped their cause as they posted 78 apiece in the three-set affair.
IUPUI got a side out on 15 of 18 opportunities in the opening set, which the Jaguars won by scoring 10 of the final 14 points.
Youngstown State led 10-6 early in the second set, and a Giovanna Kuntze ace caused the eighth tie of the set at 20-20. IUPUI scored the next two points, YSU never caught up. The Penguins saved two set points on consecutive blocks before Gibson ended it with a kill.
The third set margin was never more than two until Abby Boatman's kill put IUPUI on top 18-15. YSU was able to tie the score at 20, and the Penguins eventually took a 23-22 lead on a kill by Thompson. IUPUI ended the match with three straight kills by Maddie Dean, Gibson and Rebecca Schlechte.
Youngstown State will conclude its three-match home stand on Wednesday at it hosts Northern Kentucky at 6 p.m.
