Rochester, Mich. - Aleah Hughes posted 13 kills as the Youngstown State volleyball team lost 3-0 to Oakland on Saturday at the Athletics Center O'rena. The set scores were 25-20, 25-23, 25-20.
Jamie Walling led the Golden Grizzlies, who were playing their Horizon League opener, with 14 kills on 29 attempts.
YSU was the first to 10 points in all three sets, but Oakland rallied midway through each set to come away with the sweep.
Oakland scored nine straight points in the first set after YSU led 10-7, and the Golden Grizzlies were able to withstand a Penguin rally that closed the gap to 21-20. Oakland called a timeout and scored the final four points of the set to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Penguins also led midway through the second set at 12-8 and 13-9, but Oakland answered again and went ahead 16-14. YSU tied the score at 22 on a Morgan Cleevely kill and again at 23 on a kill by Brooklen Pe'a, but back-to-back kills by Walling put Oakland up 2-0.
A Varcolla kill gave YSU a 10-9 lead, its final advantage of the match, in the third set. Oakland scored six of the next eight points to go up 15-12, and the Golden Grizzlies pushed the margin to 21-14 before winning 25-20.
Youngstown State will host Wright State at Beeghly Center on Friday at 6 p.m. to open a three-match home stand.
