The Youngstown State volleyball team couldn't slow down the hot-hitting UIC Flames in a 3-0 loss at the Flames Athletic Center in Chicago on Friday evening. The set scores were 25-8, 25-18, 25-19.
UIC had 49 kills in 105 attacks and registered a .381 attack percentage in the sweep. Kiera James and Paola Santiago combined for 30 kills with just five errors in 56 attempts.
UIC went on an 11-1 run early in the first set to seize control, and it went on a 4-0 spurt after a Hughes kill got the Penguins to within 18-15 in the second. The Flames scored the first seven points of the third set before YSU countered with a 5-0 run and eventually tied the score four different times. YSU was within one at 19-18 on another Hughes kill, but UIC ended the match on a 6-1 run.
Youngstown State will conclude the first half of Horizon League play at Milwaukee and Green Bay next week.
