Aleah Hughes posted a double-double with 10 kills and 20 digs as the Youngstown State volleyball team fell in four sets in the season finale at Wright State on Saturday. The set scores were 24-26, 25-16, 25-14, 25-22.
The Penguins finished the 2018 campaign with a 7-22 overall record and a 1-15 mark in Horizon League play. Wright State improved to 15-13 overall and clinched a spot in the Horizon League Tournament with a 7-9 conference mark.
While Hughes had match-highs with her 10 kills and 20 digs, YSU also got eight kills from Brooklen Pe'a and Erin Kalahar. Giovanna Kuntze and Reis Zandier both had 13 digs, and senior Sarah Varcolla finished her career with a six-kill, seven-block performance.
Celia Powers had 14 kills and 13 digs to lead Wright State.
The Penguins rallied from a 23-18 deficit in the opening set to collect a 26-24 win. After a side out, Hughes, Margaux Thompson and Pe'a had three straight kills to spark a 6-0 run. Varcolla then teamed up with Pe'a and Hughes for consecutive blocks to set up set point, and Pe'a finished the set on a kill after Wright State tied the score.
Wright State won the next two sets 25-16 and 25-14, and Youngstown State fought in a 25-22 loss in set four. The Penguins led as late as 17-16 on senior Morgan Tippie's kill, but the Raiders scored the next four points to go up 20-17. The Penguins cut the deficit down to one on kills by Valor Haggerty and Marketa Plesingrova, but that's as close as they would get. Varcolla had a kill, and she poetically teamed up with her fellow senior for a block on YSU's last point of the season to make the score 24-22.
