Calaeb Campbell completed his first season as an assistant coach at Youngstown State in 2018.
Campbell spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Southeast Missouri where he focused on the Redhawks’ liberos and defense.
“I am grateful and excited to have Caleb join our YSU volleyball family,” YSU head coach Aline Scott said. “His work ethic and enthusiasm for the game will help to challenge our players while still allowing him to connect with them. We have a shared vision on how to train and develop players, and I know his ability to connect with recruits will help us tremendously.”
The Penguins won six of their first nine matches of the Scott era and claimed the Bucknell Invitational tournament title in the first weekend. The Penguins beat Saint Peter's, NJIT and Bucknell at the tournament, and they went on to also defeat UNLV, Duquesne and George Mason in non-conference play. The win over George Mason was the 500th in program history.
Margaux Thompson was named the MVP of the Bucknell Invitational to begin a year of progression for the sophomore, and she was also named to the All-Tournament Team at Duquesne. Thompson surpassed 240 kills for the second straight season and posted 248 over 29 matches. She set a new career high with 3.56 digs per set and 360 total digs.
Aleah Hughes made a big impact on her return to the program. After taking a year away from the sport in 2017, she led the team with 2.70 kills and 3.87 digs per set, becoming the first Penguin to lead the team in both kills and digs in 15 years. Hughes was the only player in the Horizon League to lead her team in both kills and digs per set, and she was also the only player it the conference to rank in the top 10 in both categories.
Hughes and Erin Kalahar were both named Academic All-Horizon League, and the team posted a 3.62 cumulative GPA for the fall 2018 semester.
The Penguins saw a major uptick in digs per set in 2018, going from 14.64 in 2017 to 17.70 in 2018. That averaged ranked 19th in the country, and it was the highest by a Penguins team since 2007.
At SEMO, Campbell helped the Redhawks rank fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference with 16.85 digs per set in his first year. Senior libero Jade Mortimer ranked fourth individually in the conference with 4.61 digs per set and 525 total digs. The Redhawks experienced a four-win improvement in 2017 in what was Campbell’s second season.
In addition to serving as the position coach for liberos, defensive specialists and secondary passers, Campbell was charged with overseeing the program’s daily operations, practice planning and team travel. He was heavily involved with the design and distribution of the team’s gear in addition to helping with recruiting and developing marketing strategies to increase attendance at matches and team camps.
Prior to his two-year stint at Southeast Missouri, Campbell spent 14 months as a volunteer assistant coach at Tennessee Tech. He was responsible for demonstrating and running a variety of team and position-specific drills. He also aided heavily in student-athlete physical fitness. TTU finished the season ranked second in the league in digs per set with 16.60 and held opponents to a .208 hitting percentage, which ranked fifth in the OVC.
Before his experience in the OVC, Campbell coached at the club and high school levels. He was the head coach of the MidTN Volleyball Club out of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and he spent nearly three years as a site director and coach with the Ethos Volleyball Club. His high school experience included a season at Hume-Fogg Academic High School in Nashville, Tenn. and three years assisting the staff at Cookeville High School.
Campbell, a native of Spencer, Tenn., is a 2013 graduate of Tennessee Tech with his Bachelor of Arts degree in Multidisciplinary Studies and Exercise Science. Throughout his undergrad, Campbell played club volleyball at Tennessee Tech. He served as the libero for the team and earned Best Defensive Player each season. He also worked closely with the Exercise Science Majors Club to get the team active in the community with various philanthropic activities.
