Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Youngstown State men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2017 season on Saturday morning at the Duquesne Duals held at at the Schenley Oval. Of the 16 runners who competed for the Penguins, 11 made their collegiate debuts.
Teams competing at the meet were Duquesne, Pittsburgh, Cleveland State, Indiana (Pa.), Carnegie Mellon and Robert Morris.
For the women, senior Michelle Klim paced the Guins with a time of 19:36.4 which was good for a 22nd place finish. Suzanne Koziol was just behind Klim in 24th place running a time of 19:46.0. Freshman Ashleigh Rawley was 28th with a time of 19:52 to lead the newcomers. Morgan Answll was 33rd with a time of 20:00.6.
On the men's side, five of the six runners made their collegiate debut. Freshmen Tyler Polman, Derek Basinger, Cole Lovett, Sean Peterson and Anthony Linert were all running in a collegiate meet for the first time. Polman had the top placing for the Penguins finishing with a time of 26:48.3 in the 8K race. The lone member from last year's squad to run on Saturday was Derek Morrison who ran a time of 28:41.7.
The Penguins are next in action on Thursday when they compete at the Tommy Evans Invitational hosted by Akron.
