A group of new faces were key contributors for the Youngstown State men's and women's cross country teams during the 2017 season while senior Michelle Klim had the best campaign of her YSU career. 


  • Of the seven runners on the men's squad, six were in their first year with the Cross Country program.
  • Freshman Tyler Polman was the top finisher for the Penguins in every race.
  • Polman placed 25th at the Horizon League Championships in his first appearance. 
  • Senior Michelle Klim was the top YSU finisher in five races for the women.
  • Klim's best finish was second at the Disney World Cross Country Classic. YSU finished third out of 23 teams at the event. She finished 20th at the Horizon League meet.
  • On the women's side, the emergance of freshmen Natalie Fleming and Ashleigh Rowley was a highlight.
  • Rowley was among the top-three YSU finishers in six of seven events, including second at the HL Championships with a 21st-place finish. 
  • Fleming was among the top-three YSU finishers in five of seven meets and led the team with a 15th place finish at the Tommy Evans Invitational. She finished 35th at the Horizon League Championships.
  • Of the 11 Penguins to run at the women's league meet, seven made their HL Championships debut.
