Cross Country Teams Geared For Tommy Evans Invitational

The Youngstown State women's and men's cross country teams are geared up for their second race of the season at the 50th Annual Tommy Evans Invitational, hosted by the University of Akron, Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Silver Creek Metro Park Cross Country Trails in Norton, Ohio.

The men's race will begin at 10:15 a.m. while the women will have an 11 a.m. start.

Both squads opened the 2018 campaign at the Duquesne Duals. The men placed fourth and were led by sophomore Derek Bassinger, who placed 19th with a time of 27:07.67. Freshman Ethan Sparks ran a 27:13.06 to finish in 20th while sophomore C.J. Schumacher placed 21st with a time of 27:20.28.

Freshmen Matthew Mangus and Chris Butler finished 22nd and 23rd, respectively, with times of 27:34.94 and 27:38.48.

The women's squad finished fifth and were paced by senior Jennifer Muhlenkamp with a time of 19:45.97 and finished 18th. Freshman Charlotte Crouch placed 22nd with a time of 20:02.36 while sophomore Xena Maali was 27th with a time of 20:23.99.

Sophomore Raquel Markulen turned in a time of 20:30.49 to place 29th and freshman Kasey Zaitzew recorded a time of 20:35.33 and finished 30th. Freshman Emma Hunkus ran a 21:00.87 to finish 35th.

Both teams will compete at the Auto Owners/Playmakers Spartan Invitational, hosted by Michigan State University, Friday, Sept. 14, in East Lansing, Mich.
