Men’s Cross Country Wins Tommy Evans Invitational; Women Place Fourth

Akron, Ohio – The Youngstown State men's cross country team won its first Tommy Evans Invitational while the women's team placed fourth on Saturday morning at Silver Creek Metro Park.

The Penguins had five runners finish in the top 12 and senior Alan Burns led the way with second-place time of 19:54. Senior Ryan Sullivan finished sixth with a time of 20:54 while James Nedrich and Tyler Polman were ninth and 10th, respectively, with times of 20:12 each.

Derek Basinger's time of 20:21 was good enough for a 12th-place finish. Cole Lovett ran a 20:30 and finished 20th and Ethan Sparks placed 23rd with a time of 20:39.

On the women's side, freshman Mackenzie Scott paced the Penguins with a 10th-place time of 18:45 and sophomore Nicole Squatrito was 16th with a time of 18:51. Natalie Fleming came in 21st with a time of 19:00 and Maggie Sebest finished 25th with a time of 19:04.

Jennifer Muhlenkamp ran a 19:32 to place 35th and Casey Zaitzew and Charlotte Crouch finished 40th and 41st, respectively, with times of 19:45 and 19:50.

Both teams will compete at the Auto Owners/Playmakers Spartan Invitational, hosted by Michigan State University, Friday, Sept. 14, in East Lansing, Mich.
