After nearly a month idle, the Youngstown State men's and women's cross country teams return to action at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational, Friday, Oct 4, at the University of Notre Dame.
Both programs will compete in the Gold Race, which includes Horizon League schools UIC, IUPUI, Green Bay, and Oakland, and Ohio schools such as Akron and Miami (Ohio). The invitational begins with the women's Blue Race at 1 p.m. followed by the men's Blue Race at 1:45, the men's and women's open races at 2:30 p.m. YSU's women's team's 5K is slated to start at 3:15 p.m. while the men's five-mile run is slated to start at 4 p.m.
In their last race, the both programs finished fourth at the Tommy Evans Invitational on Sept. 7.
The men's team scored 89 points and were led by Tyler Polman, who placed eighth with a time of 19:55.2. Derek Basinger finished 15th with a time of 20:25.8, Sean Peterson posted a time of 20:27.3 and finished 17th, Chris Butler finished 22nd with a time of 20:36.6 and Ethan Sparks was 27th with a time of 20:54.8.
Freshman Morgan Cole led the women's team with a ninth-place finish in 18:23.4, which ranks 15th in school history in the women's 5K. Nicole Squatrito placed 16th with a time of 18:54.5, Natalie Fleming posted a time of 19:08.9, Ashleigh Rowley came in 23rd with a time of 19:13.6, and Maggie Sebest finished 27th with a time of 19:16.5.
In the first meet of the season, junior Xena Maali and sophomore Matthew Mangus posted team-best times for the Youngstown State women's and men's cross country teams, respectively, at the Duquesne Duals on August 31.
Maali recorded a time of 20:00.06 to finish in 13th place in the 5K. Junior Raquel Markulin finished 15th with a time of 20:12.91 and freshman Hailey Zelinsky posted a time of 20:14.26 to finish 16th. Sophomore Casey Zaitzew was 18th with a of 20:31.57, freshman Ashley Ventimiglia ran 20:35.32 to place 19, sophomore Charlotte Crouch was 20th with a time of 21:19.57 and sophomore Emma Hunkus ran a 21:22.75 to place 21st.
On the men's side, Mangus ran a 26:52.02 to finish 13th in the 8K while freshman Luke Baun was 16th with a time of 28:12.12. Freshman Ethan Dobler posted a time of 28:25.09 and placed 17 while freshman Joey Stafford was 18th with a time of 28:43.01. Mikel Lagaras was 19th with a time of 29:10.59 while freshman John Gula placed 20th with a time of 29:20.39.
The Penguins run at the Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic, Saturday, Oct. 12, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.
