Fleming, Butler Lead Cross Country Teams to Impressive Outings at Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational

Notre Dame, Ind. -- Junior Natalie Fleming ran a personal-best time of 18:05.89 in the 5K and sophomore Chris Butler posted a time of 25:18.82 to lead the Youngstown State women's and men's cross country teams, respectively, at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on Friday afternoon. Out of 29 opportunities, the Penguins posted 19 personal-best times.

Fleming's time, which placed 49th, ranks tied for seventh in program history in the 5K while Butler's time ranks ninth in in the 8K/5-mile run. 

On the women's side, freshman Morgan Cole finshed 56th with a time of 18:08.82. Her time moved into 10th all-time in program history while junior Ashleigh Rowley placed 66th with a time of 18:15.62, which ranks as the 13th-fastest time in school history.

Junior Nicole Squatrito time of 18:20.26 placed 77th and ranks tied for 15th in school history. Sophomore Maggie Sebest posted a time of 18:23.36 and finished 83rd. Freshman Hailey Zalinsky turned a time of 18:51.18, sophomore Mackenzie Scott posted a time of 19:01.77, sophomore Casey Zaitzew finished with a time of 19:04.44, and freshman Ashley Ventimiglia ran a 19:09.22.

In the men's Gold Race, Youngstown State finished 16th led by Butler's 45th-place finish. Tyler Polman posted a time of 25:38.09 to finish 70th, Derek Basinger turned in a time of 25:51.74, Cole Lovett ran a 25:53.89, and Sean Peterson finished with a 25:56.26. Ethan Sparks recorded a time of 26:13.10, Matthew Mangus finished in 26:19.56, Cameron Binda had a 26:48.88 and Ethan Dobler posted a time of 27:02.71.

In the women's open race, Xena Maali led the Penguins with a time of 19:06.85 while Raquel Markulin posted a time a 19:39.64. Emma Hunkus finished with a time of 20:32.01, Hannah Ryan ran a 22:34.63, Gina Gabriele recorded a 23:50.97 and Julia Getsy posted a time of 30:23.98.

In the men's open race, C.J. Schumacher led the Penguins with a time of 26:21.84, Luke Baun ran a 27:45.26, Mikel Lagaras ran a time of 28:06.96, and Scotty Hunter posted a time of 29:31.04.

Next week, the Penguins will compete at the Disney World Cross Country Classic, Oct. 12, in Orlando, Fla.
