The Youngstown State men's basketball team held its annual media day today on Dom Rosselli Court at the Beeghly Center.
Head Coach Jerry Slocum, who is in his 12th season at Youngstown State and his 42nd overall, made a brief opening statement before each member of the coach staff and player introduced themselves to the audience. Slocum spoke about his excitement regarding this year's team and the upcoming season and then took questions from the media.
Following the Q and A with Slocum, players and Slocum broke off into one-on-one interviews with the members of the media in attendance.
The Penguins will hold their first official practice, Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Beeghly Center, and will open the 2016-17 campaign hosting Akron in the 2016 Northeast Ohio Coaches vs. Cancer Doubleheader, Saturday, Nov. 12, at 7:45 p.m.
The Penguins return 10 letterwinners and three starters from last year's squad, highlighted by junior Cameron Morse, 2015-16 All-Horizon League selection, senior Matt Donlan and junior Francisco Santiago.
Morse, the nation's eighth-leading returning scorer, averaged 20.3 points per game, had 17 20-point games last season, and led the Horizon League with 23.3 points per game in league action.
Donlan, who averaged 13.1 points per game last season, ranked fourth nationally, led the Horizon League and set a YSU single-season record with a .463 3-point field-goal percentage.
Santiago, who averaged 9.1 points per game, ranked fourth in the Horizon League with 139 assists and 4.3 assists per game last season. He also ranked tied sixth with 1.4 steals per game and with a 1.9 assist-to-turnover ratio.
