Youngstown State Men’s Basketball Inks Michael Akuchie to NLI

Michael Akuchie (pronounced "ah-coo-CHAY") has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his academic and athletic career at Youngstown State University, Head Coach Jerrod Calhoun announced on Wednesday.

"Michael is a perfect fit for our system," Calhoun said. "He can pass, catch, shoot and has a tremendous upside. He is a willing rebounder, strong and is a tremendous student. He's very cerebral on the court."

Akuchie is a 6-foot-8 forward from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and St. Thomas Aquinas High School. A two-time team captain, Akuchie averaged 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists per game last season and was named to the Miami Herald All-Broward County Second-Team.

He also shot 40 percent from 3-point range and averaged three steals per game.

Akuchie, who has a 4.2 GPA, plans to major in business and chose YSU over offers from Colgate, Cornell, Florida International, American and IPFW.

Akuchie joins Naz Bohannon (Lorain, Ohio), Jacob Brown (Clemmons, N.C.), Garrett Covington (Carmel, Ind.) and Devin Morgan (Chester, Va.) in the 2017-18 recruiting class.
