Youngstown State's Nikki Arbanas has been named the Horizon League Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week for her efforts during the first week of the season, the conference office announced on Monday.
Arbanas (Hermitage, Pa.) scored a game-high 25 points in her collegiate debut while shooting a blistering 88.9 percent from the field. She was a perfect 5-for-5 from 3-point range to become the first Penguin in 18 years to shoot 100 percent on at least five attempts. Arbanas was also 4-for-4 from the free-throw line while adding three assists and two rebounds as YSU defeated Niagara 83-61.
Arbanas' 25 points is tied for the seventh-most ever by a freshman in YSU's Division I era, and it's the most since 1995. She also had the most points by a freshman in a season opener since at least 1978.
Wright State's Tay'ler Mingo was named the Horizon League Player of the Week.
Youngstown State will play its first road game of the season on Tuesday at Kent State. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
