Ithica, N.Y. – Cornell shot 57 percent and outscored the Youngstown State women's basketball team by 16 in the second half in a 75-63 victory over the Penguins on Friday evening at Newman Arena.
The Big Red got 22 points on 11-of-13 shooting from Nicholle Aston, and Cornell had 27 assists on 33 field goals. Cornell, which improved to 8-5 this season, shot 62.1 percent in the second half and was 8-for-14 from 3-point range for the game. The Big Red were averaging 3.2 3-pointers per game and shooting 26.6 percent from distance coming into the contest.
Cornell outrebounded YSU 32-19 and held an 18-0 advantage in second-chance points.
YSU shot 68.2 percent in the first half and made seven of its first eight attempts from 3-point range, but the Penguins couldn't keep pace with the Big Red in the second half. YSU shot 29.2 percent in the final 20 minutes, which included just three makes on 16 attempts from inside the arc.
YSU led 39-35 at halftime and held a 44-39 advantage early in the second half. A 3-pointer by Cornell's Christine Kline sparked a 7-0 run for the Big Red, which went on to outscore YSU 30-9 over the next 11 minutes. Cornell also had runs of 10-0 and 11-0 during that stretch, and the Penguins went five minutes without a field goal after Indiya Benjamin's 3-pointer made the deficit a manageable 58-53 with 9:03 left.
Youngstown State's hot shooting in the first half allowed it to lead for more than 16 of the first 20 minutes, but Cornell kept up o set up its separation in the second half.
YSU led by five four times in the first six minutes, the final time on a Schlegel triple that made the score 15-10. Cornell scored the next seven points to take its first lead at 17-15, and the Big Red led 22-18 with 9:31 left. YSU then scored eight straight points to go ahead 26-22 on a Jenna Hirsch 3, and Walker's bucket at the 3:53 mark gave the Penguins their largest lead at 37-31. That accounted for Walker's 14th points of the game, but the senior forward picked up her second foul on the next possession and scored just two points the rest of the way.
Youngstown State will begin Horizon League play at UIC on Thursday. Tipoff against the Flames at the UIC Pavilion will be at 8 p.m. Eastern, and the game will be broadcast live on the Sports Animal 1390 WNIO.
