Youngstown State senior forward Heidi Schlegel has been named the Horizon League Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending Jan. 18, the conference office announced on Monday.
Schlegel, a graduate student who is studying Interdisciplinary Communications, earned the league's weekly award for the second time in her career. She is also the second Penguin in the last three weeks to earn the award, joining senior teammate Latisha Walker.
Schlegel registered season highs of 25 points and 18 rebounds as the Penguins beat in-state rival Cleveland State on Thursday at Beeghly Center. The Wapakoneta, Ohio, native made 10 of her 15 field-goal attempts and was 5-of-6 from the free-throw line while fighting off double teams all night. Schlegel had the second-highest scoring game and the third-highest rebounding game in the conference during the week.
The Penguins will play host to Wright State on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Beeghly Center. The game against the Raiders, who have a 14-4 record, will be broadcast live on 570 WKBN, iHeartRadio and ESPN3.
